There is a lot of controversy surrounding Naomi Osaka and her mental health break. It started with a fine, then being threatened by all major tournaments, to her then pulling a BOSS move and pulling out of the French Open. I’m here for it completely. Mental health is always more important than your job. Especially when your job is what is causing you to need a mental health break.
Let’s be honest for a moment. Who is watching or caring about these press conferences? I NEVER watch press conferences. I just spent the last two hours watching a tennis game, basketball game, or whatever I was watching. I’m not about to watch someone ask a player about what went wrong or right. WE SAW IT! WE ALL SAW IT WITH OUR OWN EYES!! Ask one of the many commentators what happened. Marshawn Lynch said it best, “I’m just here so I don’t get fined.”
Some may say that she knew press conferences were a part of the package. But as we all know, we never know just how a situation will affect us until we’re IN it. Everyone is different. She now knows and she’s doing what’s best for her. Also, let’s get rid of the rule that you HAVE to do press conferences. Let the ones that want to talk, talk and the ones that don’t, won’t.
So if this is your first introduction to Naomi, I’m sorry you didn’t get to see her play. Maybe you will get to in the documentary series that will be on Netflix on July 13th. According to Netflix, the title is ‘Naomi Osaka. The logline states: ‘What does it feel like to be one of the best tennis players in the world? An intimate look inside the life of one of the most gifted and complex athletes of her generation offers insight into the tough decisions and ecstatic triumphs that shape Naomi Osaka as both an elite global superstar and a young woman navigating a pressure-filled world.’
I don’t know about you but I’m excited. She’s a world class athlete and I can’t wait to see more about how she trains, competes, interacts with her family, and relaxes.

Do what’s best for you Naomi and we will see you when you get back!
