I’ll keep this short and to the point. I didn’t know that I needed a pirate comedy series but now that I do know I’m excited. According to MAX, Our Flag Means Death is loosely based on the life of Stede Bonnet aka The Gentlemen Pirate. A wealthy Englishmen born to wealthy parents that lived on the island of Barbados. Apparently, he got tired of being wealthy and decided to be a pirate. Yes, someone with money decided to sail the seven seas and risk his life. Couldn’t be me!
The series is executive produced by Taika Waititi. Not only is Taika producing the show, he will also be directing the pilot episode and starring as “Blackbeard”. Joining the case as series regulars, Ewen Bremner as “Buttons”, David Fane as “Fang”, Joel Fry as “Frenchie”, Guz Khan as “Ivan”, and Matt Maher as “Black Pete”. The cast also includes Kristian Nairn, Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Rory Kinnear, Con O’Neill and Vico Ortiz.
Unfortunately, I’m not seeing any women in this cast. Which is extremely unfortunate because women have always existed. I’m sure there were some very kick-butt female pirates back in the 1800s! Hopefully, the execs will put all the faces on a board and see that there needs to be some women added. If they don’t, I fear that they may lose out on some of the viewers they hoped to capture. Pretty faces are nice but sometimes we need more.
